Staging & Spacing your Garden

Read Time: 2 MINOrganizing the plants in your Garden is important to optimize growth for each plant, and to ensure that your plants are receiving the nutrients and resources necessary. Follow along with our guides: Plant Compatibility and Shade Group to help you plan out your garden. These guides provide essential information on which plants thrive together and respond to varying levels of shade, allowing you to create a harmonious and flourishing garden environment.
Plant Compatibility
When deciding on which plants to purchase, you must ensure that the plants are compatible with your Garden (Personal or Rise Garden) or Garden Level (1st, 2nd, or 3rd level). This will ensure that your plants grow within the proper amount of growth space provided by your Garden.
Plants that grow past the growth space capacity can damage the Garden, as the plants touch the lights, producing and causing condensation to penetrate the garden’s electronics. They will also compete with other plants for resources, which can lead to growth issues for the surrounding plants. To help guide you through this process, please see our Plant Compabitlity Guide HERE.
Personal Garden: Our Personal Gardens have a growth space of 12 inches. As shown in our guide, plants marked as “Y” under “Personal Garden” are compatible with our Personal Gardens.
Rise Garden: Our Rise Gardens have three different growth spaces depending on the size of your Garden. Under the category “Rise Garden Level” you will see plants categorized under either Short or Tall. This corresponds to the level at which these plants should be grown in our Family or Rise Gardens.
Shade Group
Another fundamental concept that will ensure we have a successful growing journey is properly spacing your plants by Shade Group. This ensures that your plants are receiving the appropriate amount of light, space, and resources. We have three shade groups:
Zero Shade Group: These crops are light resilient and will be fine without full light. They can be placed right next to each other without worrying about leaving extra space for growth.
Single Shade Group: These crops are more dependent on light. They should only be placed next to crops from the Zero Shade group. If they are placed next to a different group, they can become too stringy and light-deficient.
Double Shade Group: These crops are the most light-dependent of the plants that we sell. They can grow very wide and need an empty spot next to them to get enough light.
For a list of what shade group your plants fall under, please check out our Shade Group Guide
HERE.
NOTE: Avoid putting any Single Shade or Double Shade plants in the spots next to your plumbing. These larger plants (with large root systems) growing on the left-hand side of your Garden can clog your plumbing system. This can cause the roots to dam the Garden's trays, which reduces the flow of water and causes overflowing and flooding. If this is the case, you can easily fix this issue by swapping the tray lids on the left-hand and right-hand sides, so that your larger plants are on the right-hand side of your Garden.
