Water Quality & Hydroponics
June 30 2024 7:18pm • Est. Read Time: 2 MINThe type of water you choose to use, will play a significant role in the growth of your plants and health of your Garden. The quality of your water will have a significant impact on the following:
The uptake of nutrients by the plant. If the water is contaminated or lacks the necessary nutrients, it will be difficult for the plants to grow and thrive.
Determining the pH Level: The pH level of the water determines the availability of nutrients to the plants. If the pH level is too high or too low it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and other problems.
Functionality of Rise Garden: Contaminants in the water can clog the system, leading to reduced efficiency and decreased plant growth.
Which type of water should I use?
In hydroponic systems, plant roots must grow entirely in water, making it essential to use great-quality water. Below you can find a list of the types of water we recommend
What is the water hardness of my water?
Determining the water hardness is crucial for hydroponics, as it affects the control of pH levels. The hardness level (soft or hard) indicates the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water.
Hard water: contains high amounts of calcium and magnesium
Soft water: lacks calcium and magnesium and may have high sodium levels
You will use the water hardness test strips provided in your Garden to perform the Water Quality Test (see below). This will help determine the amount of pH you will need to add during your weekly Smart Care.
What is the optimal pH range?
Maintaining the optimal pH range of 5.5 to 6.5, known as the "GROW ZONE," is essential for healthy plant development. Growth issues in plants can often be linked to improper water pH, which may start in your home’s water and worsen in the Garden, affecting nutrient availability. To monitor pH we strongly recommend that you use one of the monitoring tools below:
What is the appropriate water temperature?
In general, water temperature in hydroponic systems should be between 70-76 degree temperature range. Warm water can cause curling and root rot in your plants. If you encounter this issue we recommend the following:
Attach a couple of clip-on fans to cool down the air temp around the plant's leaves which will help the plants stay healthy even with warmer water.
Each week when adding water, add a handful of ice cubes as well.
Space out the Gardens a bit so there is an air gap between them to allow for less overlap of lights.
